Castles & Rocks in the Palatinate
Immerse yourself in the world of Knights & Lords
Legendary castles and craggy rocks crown the top of the Palatinate and Alsace. Just 2 km away from the Hotel Pfalzblick, the ruins of Neudahn Castle sit enthroned on the peak of a mountain. The castle was built in the 13th century and expanded upon in the 16th century. Even though the Upper and Lower Castles in the Neudahn group of castles were destroyed by the French in the 17th century, the Neudahn Castle with two battery towers, gate system and shield wall are still impressive even as ruins.
You can reach the Altdahn Castle in just 35 minutes on foot. It will impress you with the dizzying heights of medieval architecture. The Altdahn Castle belongs to the Dahn Castle Group along with the Grafendahn and Tanstein Castles, built close together on a rock formation. Together they make up the largest castle group in the Palatinate.
One of the most popular excursion destinations in the Palatinate is located just 18 km away on the Sonnenberg mountain: Reichsburg Trifels. This castle and the sister castles Anebos and Scharfenberg make up the Annweil Castles and were considered the most noble and politically important Palatinate castles in the Staufer period. Imagine how the knights, counts and military leaders came and left. King Richard the Lionhearted was even held prisoner at the Trifels Castle in the 12th century.
